TAB 2026 Curatorial Exhibition Tour (in English)

Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2026 curatorial exhibition tour examines the paradoxical position of cheapness in architecture. While it is a quality rarely openly aspired to, low cost remains one of the most persistent demands placed on construction. Cost becomes a dominant value, reducing the built environment to systems of cheap efficiency calculated through the logic of an Excel sheet.

This reveals a widening gap between available resources and the value expected from architecture.

The exhibition unfolds within Linnahall, the monumental modernist edifice that serves both as a venue and a curatorial agent. Long abandoned yet continuously debated over, the building embodies this biennale's central question: reconstruction is deemed too expensive, demolition equally so, meanwhile postponement steadily accumulates further material and cultural cost. Linnahall demonstrates that the answer to "how much?"

cannot be reduced to numbers on a spreadsheet, but unfolds as a spatial, political and temporal condition — a question about value itself.

Within Linnahall’s iconic spaces, the exhibition moves from critique to practice, presenting works that refine existing approaches, adapt available resources and reveal new possibilities where thoughtful design meets the demands of cost efficiency and affordability.

The exhibition brings together contributions from twelve countries.

Participants include studio TAKK (Spain / New York), asphalt / Kollektiv für Architektur (Austria), baubüro in situ (Switzerland), Secretary (Sweden), Márton Pintér (Hungary), HouseEurope!, Mantas Peteraitis Architecture Studio (Lithuania), Bimberg&Frenz (Germany / Belgium), and Avarrus Arkkitehdit (Finland), whose project Helsingin Muurarimestari was recently shortlisted for the 2026 Finlandia Prize for Architecture.

The exhibition also includes a collective presentation by Estonian architecture practices, showcasing resourceful construction solutions in which limited conditions have not prevented strong architectural expression.

Rather than offering singular answers, the tour invites reconsideration of what architecture truly costs, how constraint can open new perspectives, and what forms of value the discipline can produce.

The tours will be held either in English or in Estonian by TAB 2026 curators. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes.
